Color Bleeding

Ensuring colorfastness is a very important step in our hand-dyeing process. While we do all we can to prevent any color bleed, it’s not possible to provide a  guarantee, especially with the very saturated colors we all love .⁣

We do have a few tips to help prevent color bleeding.⁣

  • When it is time to soak/wash your knits, be sure to do so in cool to lukewarm/cool water. Very warm/hot water may encourage dyes to bleed out.⁣
  • When you are soaking your knits do so for 10-20 minutes only. For the first few minutes, watch your knits in the water. Move it around a bit with your hands. Do you see any dye bleeding out? If so, remove the project immediately.⁣
  • Set a timer! When your knits are soaking, be sure to set a timer for 10-20 minutes. If you don't, there is a good chance that you'll forget your knits are there. Longer times in water can also encourage color bleeding.⁣
  • Color Catchers! We recommend adding a few Shout Color Catchers to your soak. They will help 'catch' any dye that might be in the water.⁣
  • Last but not least, and most importantly, soak/wash your swatch in the same way you would sock/wash your knit. A swatch will tell you if the color has any chance of bleeding. This is especially important with color work!⁣

We know how upsetting it can be to have your finished knit bleed and alter the colors of your project. Following the above tips are highly recommended to keep you and your knits happy!⁣

P.S. Dye from your yarn should never bleed onto your hands while you knit. If this ever happens, please reach out to us and we will work with you to resolve the issue.⁣
