My First Sweater / Cardigan Class

Journey Pullover or Journey Cardigan

Ready to knit your very first sweater — or cardigan? This in-person class is designed for knitters who are ready to take the leap into garment knitting in a supportive, welcoming environment.

With guidance from Jeannie and Nancy, you’ll work step-by-step through either the Journey Pullover or Journey Cardigan, two approachable top-down designs knit seamlessly at a generous gauge for quick results. This class is all about building confidence, understanding sweater construction, and realizing that yes — you can knit a sweater!

Dates: Saturdays — January 31, February 7, February 21, February 28
Time: 12:00–2:00 PM
Location: North Bay Fiber (in person)
Instructors: Jeannie & Nancy
Class Fee: $60



What You'll Learn:

• How to measure and understand gauge
• How to choose the correct size and ease
• Top-down sweater construction
• Working a 1×1 folded collar
• Short-row shaping for the back neckline
• Raglan increases
• Dividing for sleeves and body
• Tips for finishing and blocking



 

Project Options:

Students may choose one project - pattern is included in class cost:

Both patterns are designed as excellent first garments.


 

Prerequisites:

This class is for an Advanced Beginner knitter.
Students should:

  • Know how to knit and purl

  • Be comfortable knitting ribbing

  • Be comfortable working in the round

Important Homework (Required):

To make the most of our class time, homework is required before the first session.

Before the first class, students must:

  • Have yarn selected

  • Knit and block a gauge swatch

If you visit the shop before the first class, we are happy to help you choose yarn and explain exactly what we’re looking for in a gauge swatch. Students receive 10% off yarn and needles for class.

 

 


 

 

Materials:

  • Yarn that meets gauge -  Journey yarn encouraged (because that is what the pattern is knit in) but not required.

  • Needles required to achieve gauge

  • Stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors

Class Size:

  • Minimum enrollment: 3 students

  • Maximum enrollment: 6 students

Small class size ensures plenty of individual attention.

 

 


 

 

Class Goal:

By the end of the class, students will have confidently cast on, completed their yoke shaping, divided for sleeves, and gained the skills and confidence needed to finish their first sweater or cardigan.

 

 


 

 


Cancellation & Refund Policy – Special Guest Class

We understand that life happens and plans can change! However, since this is a special guest class with limited availability and a one-time opportunity, we’re unable to offer rescheduling or transfer of registrations.

Cancellation Policy:

  • 72+ hours in advance: Full refund

  • 24–72 hours before class: 50% refund

  • Less than 24 hours or no-shows: No refund 

Due to the small class size and the unique nature of this guest-led event, last-minute cancellations impact both the instructors and other potential participants. We appreciate your understanding and support in helping us host meaningful and memorable experiences with our visiting teachers.

If we need to cancel the class due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, you’ll receive a full refund.
