Join us as we welcome Ohmi Fibers for a special weaving weekend at North Bay Fiber!
This Introduction to Tapestry workshop is a hands-on, beginner-friendly class designed to introduce you to the art of tapestry weaving.
Class Description
In this 3-hour workshop, you’ll learn a variety of tapestry techniques including:
• Warping a frame loom
• Color changes and basic composition
• Creating fringe, ghiordes knots, and soumak
• Professional finishing techniques
• Additional techniques covered are eccentric weft, slit technique, vertical and wavy lines (color and weave techniques), plain weave, anatomy of a woven cloth, cut and uncut ghiordes knots.
Each student will choose a weaving kit that includes a 12” x 15” frame loom, yarn, tapestry needle, and comb. You’re also welcome to bring additional yarns or materials to personalize your piece — though plenty will be provided!
Printed instructions will be given to each student, along with access to video tutorials for continued learning at home. Each tapestry will be unique, allowing you to explore texture, color, and composition for a one-of-a-kind result.
Materials Included (you keep):
• Basic frame loom (12” x 15”)
• Various yarns and fibers (a variety of colors to pick from)
• Tapestry needle and comb
Additional Materials to Bring:
• Scissors
• Notebook and pen/pencil
• 14” (approx.) stick or rod to hang your weaving
• Optional: Additional yarns or materials to incorporate into your design (please note, the shop will also have additional scraps of yarns that you can use if you'd like at no extra charge)
About the Instructors
Heather Macali is an artist, designer, and educator. She holds an MFA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and is currently an Associate Professor of Fibers at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Heather brings extensive knowledge in textile design, dyeing, and both floor loom and jacquard weaving.
Nancy Macali has been teaching for over 47 years, including 35 years at the high school level. A lifelong fiber enthusiast, she learned to knit, sew, and garden from her grandmother and has continued exploring the fiber arts ever since. Her skills span weaving, knitting, felting, dyeing, spinning, and sewing, and she’s passionate about sharing her knowledge and encouraging creativity in others.

We understand that life happens, and sometimes plans change! If you need to cancel your knitting class reservation, please let the shop know as soon as possible so we can offer your spot to someone else.
- Cancellations 48+ hours in advance: You’ll receive a full refund or the option to reschedule within 30 days.
- Cancellations within 24-48 hours: A 50% refund or rescheduling (if space allows).
- No-shows or cancellations within 24 hours: Unfortunately, we can’t offer a refund, as your reserved spot could have gone to another participant.
Since class sizes are limited, last-minute cancellations mean lost opportunities for others and impact the time and materials we've set aside. We appreciate your understanding and support in keeping things fair for everyone!
If we cancel due to weather or unforeseen circumstances you’ll have an option to receive a full refund or to reschedule within 30 days.
